Observations on Gun Violence in the US
A reader has asked for my thoughts on gun control. What follows is an effort both to educate and to stimulate a dialogue on gun violence in the United States. While it does offer opinions and proposals, I have tried to base these on objective data and unbiased research.
Let’s begin with the Second Amendment, which is not a model of artful drafting. It simply says:
A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.
In the 2008 Heller case (decision and discussion of same here), the Supreme Court held that “The Second Amendment protects an individual right to possess a firearm unconnected with service in a militia, and to use that arm for traditionally lawful purposes, such as self-defense within the home.” This was the first time since the 1939 case United States v.
